Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park is simply stunning and not to be missed! This gorgeous and varied area is also quite popular, so it really pays off to go during non peak hours.

Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park is a gigantic travertine terraced hot spring near the north entrance of the park. The whole nature of this hot spring changes from week to week with different parts of the spring being more active at different times. So every time you go there it will look a little different from the last time you saw it!

They’ve built a large boardwalk system so you can walk around to the different areas of this site. (You’ll find a lot of boardwalk in Yellowstone because the ground is too unstable to walk on.)

The scenery at Mammoth Hot Springs is beautiful and unreal!

We were completely amazed by how varied the landscape looked. One minute you’re looking at a beautiful water filled stone formation. And the next minute the terrain has changed so that it looks as though you’ve landed on Mars!

There’s lots of amenities in the Mammoth area, from supplies to camping as well if you can’t find a spot elsewhere in the park.

There’s also a bit of a village in the Mammoth area with a store, restaurants, and camping area. We didn’t stay in this region because we read a tip that it’s the least desirable place to camp in the entire park. This area is quite hot and smells strongly of sulfur. This tip proved to be spot on, so we were super thankful we choose not to camp here!

Visiting Yellowstone must include as many geysers as you can!

Our top 3 favorite geysers to see along with Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park:

  1. Grand Prismatic Geyser & Excelsior – both located in the Midway Geyser Basin.
  2. Old Faithful Geyser Loop Trail – this one takes you through countless stunning geysers all in 1 loop trail.
  3. Porcelain Geyser Basin

This photo above in particular really makes you feel like it may well be another planet!

As we were exploring the upper part of the hot springs, a wicked thunderstorm rolled in and chased us out. Maybe next year we’ll get to do a bit more exploring in this area.

As a final tip, we also heard this area is very crowded during the mid-morning to late-afternoon hours, so we went just before sunset which worked out well with the glowy golden light cast across all the formations!.

Mammoth Hot Springs was definitely a highlight of our Yellowstone trip. After a full day of geyser sight seeing, this one still stands out in my mind as one of the more fantastic sights!

  1. There’s really nothing to say that the pictures don’t already do! Mars. Totally see it. Amazing. Wow! Totally different scenery than what we have here for sure. Although Niagara Falls gives quite a view =)

    • I’d love to visit Niagara Falls someday! Yellowstone is totally different scenery than we have too – it’s a few hours away from us but it’s definitely another world! 🙂
