This Grain Free Apple Crisp comes to you with a little twist from the basic recipe. The secret ingredient in this recipe is orange juice, (an excellent tip from my mother-in-law). Notes of citrus in an apple crisp are absolutely perfect. The cinnamon and orange play off the apple, and it’s perfect with a crispy – crunchy topping!

The apple crisp is completely dairy-free so, it’s both Paleo and Vegan. My favorite topping of Homemade Maple Ice Cream is delicious, but not dairy free. For a great dairy free option, check out my Coconut Ice Cream.

We love apple crisp all-year-round, but it’s a great addition to holiday dinners because it’s easier than pie, but still delivers on the flavor. I also find it easier to squeeze in a bit of apple crisp after a full meal because there’s more fruit than pastry.

Mix all the ingredients for the topping together until they’re thoroughly combined. This crisp topping will be more like a dough than the usual crumbly topping.

For the apples, peel, core, and quarter them. Cut each quarter into 1/8 ” slices, about six slices per quarter. Layer the apples in a 9″ x 13″ baking dish.

Zest 1 teaspoon of orange zest and mix it into the topping. Juice the orange (it will measure between 1/3 and 1/2 cup of freshly squeezed juice) and mix it with the arrowroot, maple syrup, vanilla, and cinnamon.

Pour the mixture evenly over the apples.

Use a spoon to drop the crisp topping over the apple as evenly as possible. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the apples are tender. I use a foil tent or a parchment tent over my crisp to keep the topping from getting too brown. I’ve noticed with grain free products that they brown much quicker.

Serve warm with your favorite ice cream.

Ingredients
  • Topping:
  • 1 cup almond flour
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts (pecan and almonds are nice too)
  • 1 Teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 Teaspoon orange zest
  • ¼ cup coconut oil, room temperature
  • ¼ cup maple syrup, Grade A
  • Filling:
  • 3 pounds baking apples (Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and quartered
  • ¼ cup maple syrup, Grade A
  • ⅓-1/2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice from 1 orange
  • 1 Teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 Teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 Teaspoons arrowroot
Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 350° F.
  2. Mix together all the ingredients for the topping until thoroughly combined and set aside.
  3. For the apples, cut each quarter into ⅛" slices, about 6 slices per quarter and layer them in a 9" x 13" baking dish.
  4. Mix together the maple syrup, orange juice, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and arrowroot together in a bowl until well blended.
  5. Pour the mixture over the apples and spoon the topping evenly over the surface.
  6. Bake the crisp for 45-55 minutes until the apples are tender and the juices are bubbling. I always use a foil or parchment tent over my crisp to keep it from turning too brown during baking.
  7. Serve warm with your favorite ice cream.

    I love this. Apple crisps are one of my favorite desserts! I’m allergic to almonds, but I’m thinking ground oats would work perfectly for me. Thank you for posting!
